College roundup: UCLA golfers capture Prestige at PGA West
Tenth-ranked UCLA on Tuesday captured The Prestige at PGA West men’s golf tournament, placing four players among the top 11 en route to a 10-stroke victory over BYU at the par-72 Greg Norman Course in La Quinta. The triumph was the Bruins second in as many tournament, following a six-shot win at last week’s Chico State Invitational. The Bruins, who took command of the 18-school event with a first-round 280 Monday, finished 4-under-par 860. They finished with a 289 Tuesday. UCLA’s Chris Heintz and Erik Flores tied for third at 2-under 214, one shot behind co-medalists Tim Cha from UC Irvine and Danny Zimmerman from Illinois. Notre Dame’s Scott Gustafson, who shot a final-round 67, also shared third place. UCLA’s Daniel Im was in a tie for sixth at 215, and Lucas Lee was in a group at 217, tied for 11th. Pepperdine shared fifth place with Notre Dame, 20 shots off the pace. Alex Coe led the Waves at 218, tied for 13th, and Micheal Baird and Colin Wilcox shot 220, tied for 20th. UC Irvine (872) finished third and Illinois (875) was fourth. Flores (69-75-70), Heintz (70-73-71) and Im (71-73-71) broke par in the first and third rounds, and Lee (70-70-79) did so in the first and second rounds. The Bruins’ fifth golfer, Joakim Renstrom, shot 73-79-79–231. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: UCSB SWEEPS PEPPERDINE Janine Sandell had 14 kills and 14 digs and Megan Blackshire added 10 kills with no errors to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 3-0 sweep of Pepperdine in nonconference women’s volleyball. Bethany Johansen added 10 kills with one error for the Gauchos (11-7) in a 33-31, 30-25, 30-28 victory at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. Julie Rubenstein had 12 kills and six blocks, Lecca Roberts added 10, and Kekai Crabbe added 21 digs for the Waves (10-8). Loyola Marymount 3, UC Irvine 0: Emily Day had 13 kills and Katie Glomb 20 digs as the Lions (13-6) swept the Anteaters 30-20, 30-22, 30-25 at Crawford Hall in Irvine. Dina DeBernardi and Christianna Reneau added 11 kills apiece, and Heather Hughes contributed 10. Whitney Pavlik and Trisha White had 10 kills apiece for UC Irvine (7-13). Concordia-Irvine 3, The Master’s 1: Lindsey Sommer, Lindsey Campbell, Chie Inoue and Stephanie Scheele hit double digits in kills, and Concordia (18-4, 9-4) pulled out a 30-21, 27-30, 30-23, 30-24 Golden State Athletic Conference victory. Breezie James led the Mustangs (7-15, 3-11) with 14 kills, and Amanda and Rachel Roleder added 11 apiece. Cal Lutheran 3, Pomona-Pitzer 1: The 19th-ranked Regals overcame a Game 1 loss and improved to 12-0 with a 27-30, 31-29, 30-28, 30-20 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory in Claremont. Cal Lutheran is 8-0 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens dropped to 9-9 overall and 5-3 in conference action. Whittier 3, Occidental 0: The Tigers fell to 1-9 overall and 1-8 in SCIAC play with a 30-20, 30-21, 30-28 loss to the visiting Poets in Eagle Rock. WOMEN’S SOCCER: CAL LUTHERAN DOMINATES LA SIERRA Amber Anderson netted goals a minute apart and Cal Lutheran’s women’s soccer team dominated La Sierra 9-0 in a nonconference game at North Field in Thousand Oaks. Anderson headed home free kicks by Alexis Nieves in the 65th and 66th minutes, and the Regals outshot La Sierra 36-2 and took 20 corner kicks, pinning the Eagles, from Riverside, inside their defensive half nearly the entire match. Mae Des Rosiers, Jenn Tengan, Oshrat Karkar, Katherine Miljour and Mackenzie Porter scored first-half goals, and Jordan Beeber and Nieves netted second-half goals.
