Patriots vs. Titans final score: New England’s offense shut out after halftime in wild-card loss
If that was the final game of the Tom Brady era in New England, then it ended with much more of a whimper than a bang. The Patriots’ offense was anemic in a 20-13 AFC wild-card-round loss to the Titans on Saturday, New England’s earliest playoff exit since 2009. The Titans will travel to Baltimore next week to face the top-seeded Ravens in the divisional round. 8:28 p.m.: Tom Brady with an incredibly ill-advised throw as he’s being sacked. It just goes straight up in the air, and he’s lucky it’s not intercepted by a defensive lineman.8:26 p.m.: New England begins with the ball after a touchback.8:05 p.m.: This game was supposed to start at 8:15 but has been pushed back 10 minutes due to the Bills/Texans game going long.Kickoff pushed back to 8:25 p.m. ET, per announcement in press box.— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) January 5, 2020 Neither team scored after halftime until Brady threw a pick-six with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Patriots had just 85 yards in the second half. Overall, Brady finished with 20-for-37 passing for 209 yards and an interception.MORE: Watch select NFL playoff games live with fuboTV (7-day free trial)Brady’s counterpart, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, had an even quieter game, but Tennessee didn’t need much from him because running back Derrick Henry had 182 rushing yards and a touchdown on 34 carries. He added a 22-yard reception to finish with 204 yards from scrimmage, making up a huge portion of Tennessee’s 272 total yards.Henry had all 75 yards of what turned out to be the game-winning drive just before halftime. All night, he ran into the teeth of New England’s defense, which was the best in the league by many measures this year. After the Titans used some penalty shenanigans — the same ones Pats coach Bill Belichick used earlier this year — to milk the clock, the Patriots had the ball with 4:44 to go. They quickly got to around midfield, but then a dropped pass by Julian Edelman and an inaccurate pass from Brady ended the drive.New England again struggled to stop Henry and the Titans’ offense, leaving Brady just 15 seconds to complete a from his 1. The first play of the drive ended with an interception that Logan Ryan returned for the clinching score. Brady, who is headed to free agency in the offseason, returned to the sideline with more question marks surrounding him and Belichick than ever in their storied partnership.Sporting News tracked the live score, updates and highlights from the AFC wild-card game between the Patriots and Titans.
