Greenpeace activists end West Hercules rig protest

first_imgGreenpeace activists have ended their protest on the Barents Sea-bound West Hercules offshore drilling rig, currently located near Rypefjord village in the north of Norway, after spending 16 hours on the rig. ©GreenpeaceTo remind, Greenpeace activists on Monday climbed the West Hercules, which was hired by Norwegian oil giant Equinor to drill in the Barents Sea offshore Norway.Four climbers, four kayakers, and other activists went on Monday morning to action against West Hercules. After 16 hours on the rig, the activists are now back on land.Greenpeace said that the protest had ended due to bad weather.Greenpeace Norway’s leader, Frode Pleym, said: “We always put our own and others’ safety first, and therefore we have decided to leave the rig. But the work to stop new oil drilling continues with full strength, and our climate lawsuit against the state for their uncontrolled oil drilling is just one of the ways we are going to do it.”West Hercules is a semi-submersible drilling rig owned by offshore drilling contractor Seadrill. The rig is slated to drill the Korpfjell Deep well, designated 7335/3-1, located in the Barents Sea for Norwegian oil giant Equinor in early May. Equinor received the safety consent from the Norwegian safety watchdog to drill this well using the est Hercules rig in late March. The well is in the far north-east of an opened area in the south-east Barents Sea, around 420 kilometers off the coast of Finnmark in a water depth of 239 meters. It is also worth mentioning that this latest protest on the West Hercules by Greenpeace is not the first one. Namely, Greenpeace “kayaktivists” in March 2018 boarded the West Hercules rig at the Skipavika yard on the west coast of Norway.Offshore Energy Today StaffSpotted a typo? It’s express delivery as England Golf partners British Speedgolf

first_img24 Apr 2017 It’s express delivery as England Golf partners British Speedgolf England Golf is partnering British Speedgolf to promote the fast and fun version of the game as part of its Golf Express campaign. The partnership supports the aims of both organisations to get more people playing golf by attracting them with shorter, quicker formats of the game. Golf Express is England Golf’s national campaign to encourage busy people to play more often by promoting 9-hole golf and other short formats. Speedgolf also sets out to appeal to people who love golf but can’t find the time to play with work and family commitments – and who enjoy running and having fun. It offers a faster, more athletic version of golf, where a player can complete a full 18 holes in under 80 minutes, or 9 holes in under 40 minutes, by jogging between shots. The challenge is balancing the running pace with the ability to quickly and accurately play shots to get the lowest score possible. A Speedgolf score combines the sum of shots with the time taken to run the golf course. Shooting a round of 90 in a time of 70 minutes and 21 seconds gives a Speedgolf score of 160:21. Both Golf Express and British Speedgolf highlight the fitness benefits of the sport. A nine-hole round at walking pace can be fitted in to two hours and means players will walk two to three miles, take over 5000 steps and burn over 450 calories. Speedgolf also offers players an opportunity to have fun while improving their health and fitness. British Speedgolf is planning to showcase its format during England Golf Week in August with an event on the Bracken course at Woodhall Spa. Claire Hodgson, England Golf Head of Participation, said: “Golf Express and British Speedgolf are a perfect fit and this new partnership will help us to tell more people that golf is a fun and flexible game which really can fit into a busy lifestyle.” Pam Painter, British Speedgolf Co-Founder, added: “Speedgolf adds an athletic dimension to golf that enhances the fitness benefits of the sport. It is also a lot of fun and is designed to fit into our hectic 21st century lifestyles. “Speedgolf appeals to golfers of all abilities but is also attracting those from the running community, especially individuals who favour cross discipline sports.”   To learn more about Golf Express and to find 9-hole or other short format offers and a directory of facilities visit To learn more about British Speedgolf visit Image courtesy British Speedgolflast_img read more

New Generators To Power Emergency Shelters at Brookdale

first_imgThe generators are being funded through the Sandy Hazard Mitigation Grant Program’s Infrastructure Grant and Energy Allocation Initiative.According to the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the project cost for the new generator at Collins Arena is $457,560. The dollar figure for improvements to the Warner Student Life Center is currently being reviewed, though anticipated to be around the same amount. The estimated date of completion for the generator installation is December 2017, said MCSO public information officer Cynthia Scott. With these new generators, county OEM ser vices are anticipating the two buildings at Brookdale will be an integral piece of the Monmouth County Emergency Operations Plan.Scott said Brookdale was chosen as the site because the college “is located outside of any flood zones, the campus is accessible, and the Collins Arena and Student Life Center are capable of holding the largest number of evacuees in one location, thus allowing Monmouth County to maximize its resources.”Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden called Brookdale “an ideal location” for emergency shelters. Other locations are being planned, according to Scott. After Super Storm Sandy slammed the Jersey Shore, Monmouth University was used as the county’s evacuation shelter. Nearly 1,500 people flocked to the university in West Long Branch for relief. The Robert J. Collins Arena is the home court for the Brookdale Jersey Blues, and is also used for high school graduations and other large-scale events. Capacity inside is capped around 2,000 in the 23,000-square-foot event space, according to Brookdale. A four-lane track wraps around the length of the arena, spanning 1/10 of a mile. The Warner Student Life Center, which opened in 2008, is an 81,000-square-foot complex only a few hundred feet away from the arena. It houses the community college’s 335-seat cafeteria, bookstore, numerous large seminar rooms and smaller offices on the bottom floor.Murphy said Brookdale and Monmouth County jointly applied for and received the grant funding for the emergency generators in fiscal year 2015.Throughout Monmouth County, 50 total projects have benefitted from the two Sandy Hazard Mitigation Grants, with $11,457,031 being allocated to energy and infrastructure improvements. On April 13, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders unanimously passed a resolution approving a Memorandum of Understanding between the MCSO and Brookdale for the community college to become both an Emergency Evacuation Center and a Community Reception Center. This article was first published in the April 20-27, 2017 print edition of The Two River Times. By Jay Cook | LINCROFT – In the event another major disaster like 2012’s Super Storm Sandy strikes Monmouth County, two buildings on Brookdale Community College’s Lincroft campus will be a refuge for residents. Thanks to federal grants, permanent emergency generators will soon be installed at the Robert J. Collins Arena, and also at the Warner Student Life Center, both on the campus’ southern edge. The college is accessible from Phalanx Road and County Road 520.“In emergency situations, such as we saw after Super Storm Sandy, members of our community often need guidance, support and a safe place to go,” Brookdale president Maureen Murphy said in a statement to The Two River Times. “While we hope we never see a disaster like Sandy again, we are happy to be part of an initiative to provide a safe space for county residents.”last_img read more

‘We train for so long’: Former Temple fencer reacts to Summer Olympic Games postponement

first_imgAs of Tuesday, the U.S. has more than 360,000 cases of coronavirus and 11,000 deaths and Japan has seen more than 4,600 cases and 80 deaths, the Times reported. In Tokyo, there are more than 1,000 cases, according to “I was not fortunate enough to be smart enough to get a home gym before all this happened,” Thompson said. “So I’m getting really creative about different exercises I can do. It’s a little frustrating because I feel like I’m downgrading my training but with the situation, you can only do what you have.” “I think a year definitely helps to change the momentum of what’s going on,” Thompson said. “With the Olympic trials, a year also gives me more time to work on my weaknesses, work on my strengths and get some more experience.” Thompson was supposed to compete in three Olympic qualifiers to determine if she would have made the U.S. national team. When President Donald Trump announced a travel ban for 26 European countries on March 11, all the qualifiers were postponed.  Because she is unable to fence, Thompson has to stay at home and work on exercises that are not directly related to fencing. As a result, Thompson is preparing for the games by working on her cardio and exercises like squats and lunges that help her fence better. When all of the qualifiers were postponed, Thompson was not surprised about the Olympics being postponed. Kamali Thompson, a 2012 biology alumna, competes at the 2017 New York Women’s Sabre World Cup. Thompson fenced for Temple from 2008-12. | DEVIN MANKY / COURTESY Thompson, a former Temple sabre and 2012 biology alumna, had been training for a spot on the United States fencing team for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, but the games were postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic. Thompson fenced for Temple from 2008-12 and finished her career with a record of 175-48. Thompson held the program record for most career victories by a sabre until this year. Seniors Kerry Plunkett and Malia Hee finished their careers with 235 wins each. Thompson usually trains at the Peter Westbrook Foundation in New York City. However, due to COVID-19, the gym has been closed indefinitely. Even though COVID-19 is a global pandemic, Thompson believes the Olympics will be the first event that brings the whole world together after the Coronavirus is contained. Globally, there are currently more than 1 million cases of coronavirus and more than 75,000 people have died from the virus as of Tuesday afternoon, the New York Times reported. Thompson’s first competition was supposed to take place in Belgium at the end of March; the other two were scheduled in St. Louis, Missouri, and Seoul, South Korea. The Olympics were originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 to August 9. They will now take place July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021. “It was a little upsetting to say the least just because we train for so long, or I’ve been doing it for so long to compete in the summer hopefully,” Thompson said. “But in the end, it’s better postponed than canceled so I’m still pretty happy.” Thompson believes having an extra year to train will be beneficial, depending on how much the virus is contained so gyms can be opened up again, she said. The top four fencers from each of the three weapons qualify for the Olympics. Thompson is currently ranked fourth in sabre, she said. With dozens of sports leagues postponing their seasons amid the COVID-19 outbreak, Kamali Thompson expected the Olympics would be postponed too. “First and foremost, the Olympics are about bringing everyone together,” Thompson said. “I think that when the Olympics do happen because we are experiencing a pandemic right now, this will be the first time that the world will be able to come together, everyone will be healthy and it will be a really exciting moment.”last_img read more
