Any doubts we had that the Nexus 5 will arrive very soon have been quashed today because the smartphone made a brief appearance on to the Google Play Store. Those lucky enough to be visiting the site when it happened would have seen the black version of the Nexus 5 you see above sitting next to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets. The URL for the phone’s page also included reference to 16GB, which seems likely to be the base model alongside a 32GB option. As for the price, the same page suggests Google intends to sell the new smartphone for $349. Google was very competitive on price when it released the Nexus 4, and the 16GB Nexus 5 actually matches what the Nexus 4 16GB model originally sold for before being reduced to $249 more recently. It’s worth pointing out there was a cheaper $300 8GB model, but it seems unlikely we’ll get that option again for the Nexus 5.When you consider the iPhone 5S sells for $649, and handsets including the Galaxy S4 and HTC One are priced around the $600 mark, the Nexus 5 is a bargain.Google isn’t cutting any corners in terms of performance to reach that price point. Inside the smartphone we expect to find a quad core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM sitting behind a 5-inch 1080p display. It’s also going to ship with Android 4.4 preloaded and none of the crapware other Android phones sometimes include. With the Nexus 5 page accidentally appearing on the Google Play site, it seems likely we’ll get an official announcement before the week is over. Let’s just hope this time Google has enough stock to meet demand and consumers aren’t left waiting weeks to purchase the new smartphone.
