VICTORVILLE – A proposed highway linking the Antelope and Apple valleys has a name, E-220, and status as a high priority in the nation’s freeway network, according to project proponents. High Desert Corridor Coalition’s co-chairman, San Bernardino County Supervisor Bill Postmus and state Sen. George Runner, R-Lancaster, said the inclusion of E-220 on the high national priority list puts the project in a better position to pull in federal funding. “When it comes time for federal dollars, it will be higher up on the list,” Runner said. The proposed highway would stretch nearly 50 miles, running from the Antelope Valley Freeway to Interstate 15. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has a rough estimate of $1.4 billion for the highway’s construction. Postmus credited Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, and Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, for helping get the project on the national priorities list. “When the coalition started five years ago, this proposal wasn’t on anyone’s agenda,” Postmus said. “It shows how powerful the High Desert can be when we work together.” It will be at least a decade before any construction begins. About $10 million in federal funding has been secured for environmental studies, Runner said. “The first thing to do is get the environmental studies done,” Runner said. “That has to be done before you acquire right-of-way.
